Streamlined Irons: Photographs by James B. Abbott and Jay Texter
Prints from the show are available for sale. Please contact Rick De Coyte (rick@fineartprint.com) for more information A recently published book by Jay Raymond, Streamlined Irons, is an exhaustive survey of clothes irons and Raymond’s unique collection, gloriously photographed to convey the unexpected beauty of these everyday objects. Streamlined Irons tells the story of clothes irons that were made during the era of streamlining, a design phenomenon of the 1930s and ‘40s. The book includes specially commissioned photographs of the irons by the accomplished Philadelphia area photographers James B. Abbott and Jay Texter and these photographs are on display in the current exhibit at Silicon Gallery. Shown here in large format prints, the photos uniquely capture the elegant and indeed even sensual forms of these mechanical and utilitarian objects. Some images feature details of the irons, cropped and framed to emphasize the stunning attention to detail incorporated by the manufacturers and prized by collectors such as Raymond.
