April Vollmer Firmly based in traditional printmaking techniques and materials Vollmer builds dense layers of subtle imagery on hand-made rice papers and smooth, seductive mylars. Not content with the layers within one printmaking technique she will re-visit the images with overprinting in a different medium to increase the tactile sense of the prints. This also generates more complex patterns and interrelationships between her disparate components, as seen in her large (36” x 36” mandelas) which are intensely detailed and very densely organized. In her prints she parallels the image of a hand with leaf forms, or equates the meanders on a fish with the serpentines of a Roman mosaic. Architectural plans and gridded mosaics provided her with a framework for organic animal and plant forms in her images. Her mandala forms use an explicitly mathematical foundation for her exploration of natural form and incorporate literal images from science, nature and architecture. "I find similarities in shape between plant, animal and the human body. The veins in a leaf, in an insect's wing and in my own hand reflect the same physical principles. These correspondences help me locate myself in space and time, and measure my connection to natureThe neutrality of scientific inquiry, outside human emotion, remains the source of my imagery.” April Vollmer lives and works on Manhattan's lower east side. She received her MFA in printmaking. Her prints have been exhibited extensively both here and internationally where she has also taught workshops on traditional Japanese printmaking techniques Silicon Gallery Fine Art Prints is a digital printmaking studio founded upon the collaborative printmaking model established by a handful of fine arts workshops and presses in the United States. While the tools at Silicon are digital, the philosophy is deeply rooted in the belief that it is the chemistry between the artist and the printmaker that results in the finest work. With five IRIS and one Epson printer the studio can provide printmaking services on a wide variety of materials and up to 44” by unlimited length. Silicon Gallery was one of the first galleries dedicated to showing
work created on or influenced by the computer. The current “Hot
off the Press” series of shows focus on artists who have recently
produced a body of work printed at Silicon Gallery Fine Art Prints. Contact: Works printed at Silicon
