Philadelphia Printmaking Collaborative - 2003 Portfolio This show debuts the third Philadelphia Invitational Portfolio. (A portfolio is a group of prints by different artists packaged and sold as a set.)This is a limited edition of prints that creates opportunity for local artists, highlights area print shops, and offers affordable prints to collectors. The Portfolios are co-produced by the Philadelphia Printmaking Collaborative (PPC), local print shops and the collaborative at large. Local artists are invited to participate and typically are encouraged to undertake a print in an unfamiliar medium. Thus the portfolio offers the artist with a learning experience that they might not otherwise have been able to experience. The artists for the 2003 portfolio are James Brantley, Emily Brown, Enid Mark, Stuart Netsky, Alice Oh, Hester Stinnett and Rochelle Toner “Unlike the previous two portfolios, which had a kind of youthful exuberance--mania even--this year's portfolio is a serious affair. That may be due to the landscape theme. Or it may be because most of the artists are established mid-career artists with comparatively austere aesthetic sensibilities. “ Roberta Fallon, Philadelphia Weekly (for the whole article click HERE). The two previous portfolios will also be on view during the show. Current and past portfolios can be viewed at the PPC website. The Philadelphia Print Collaborative, a regional not-for-profit partnership, promotes and sustains printmaking as a vital and valued art form by uniting artists, institutions, and advocates. The PPC has four goals; to use Philadelphia's history as a center of printmaking as a springboard for leadership; to make printmaking a vital part of art education; to develop a self-sustaining economy for printmaking; to educate new audiences to understand, value and collect prints. Silicon Gallery Fine Art Prints is a digital printmaking studio founded upon the collaborative printmaking model established by a handful of fine arts workshops and presses in the United States. While the tools at Silicon are digital, the philosophy is deeply rooted in the belief that it is the chemistry between the artist and the printmaker that results in the finest work. With five IRIS and one Epson printer the studio can provide printmaking services on a wide variety of materials and up to 44” by unlimited length. Silicon Gallery was one of the first galleries dedicated to showing work created on or influenced by the computer. The current “Hot off the Press” series of shows focus on artists who have recently produced a body of work printed at Silicon Gallery Fine Art Prints. Image: Daisy, Clover Too Stuart Netsky 2003 PPC
