Judith Schaechter is perhaps best known among Philadelphia and national art collectors and connoisseurs as a stained glass artist, however in recent years she has mastered the digital environment, including 3-D modeling software, and worked with Silicon Gallery Fine Art Prints to create a number of archival, limited edition digital prints. Some of the images in her print work are based on stained glass pieces, however many emerged solely as visions realized on the computer and produced as prints.
Each of the 10 prints in the portfolio was digitally printed on a German 100% cotton rag paper from images created using one of a variety of digital software suites, predominantly Adobe Photoshop™ and Maya™, the three-dimensional modeling program used primarily in the film industry. Although several of the images began their lives as stained glass works, for these prints Schaechter recreated each image digitally, drawing by hand on the computer to produce a new version of the original work. Each print in the portfolio is individually signed and numbered by the artist and each print is authenticated with the Silicon Gallery embossed mark. There are 25 copies numbered 1/25 to 25/25 and the prints are 20" x 28" in size.
In this portfolio, as in all her work, Schaechter toys with the viewer's notions of beauty and ugliness, fear and joy, salvation and damnation while creating images imbued with a meaning that is wholly her own. For an artist whose career began by pushing the boundaries of an ancient medium - stained glass - in order to follow her own vision, it seems only fitting that with these prints Schaechter pushes the boundaries of a new medium - digital imaging - still in the service of that unique vision. As viewers, we are free to make what we wish of these complex and engaging tableaux; Schaechter, however, will always be a few steps ahead of us.
