HOT OFF THE PRESS
Margaret McCarthy

Artist Reception April 22, 2004   6 – 8 pm

McCarthy photographed these images while in residency at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. Much like the numerous indigenous cultures that have influenced her photography, specifically Celtic and Native American, McCarthy places a profound emphasis on the natural world as an animate being that lives and breathes.  Her images focus primarily on landscapes, specifically trees, their inherent grouping, and subsequent personality or character. One evening as twilight approached, she implemented an exacting process to execute her photography. Using a large format 4”x5” field camera, she relied on her intuition and began to photograph spontaneously.  As she explains, McCarthy’s philosophy was “to keep my eye fresh.”  The images resulted in vibrant, fiery colors that are in keen contrast with the sense of mobility present during the transient moments of twilight.

McCarthy worked the photographs into strategic sequences that resulted in a commentary directed at our culture’s view of the natural world and our increasing separation from it.  The resulting series can be read as a critical statement directed at our culture that seems determined to manipulate and usurp control of the natural world.

Silicon Gallery Fine Art Prints is a digital printmaking studio founded upon the collaborative printmaking model established by a handful of fine arts workshops and presses in the United States.  While the tools at Silicon are digital, the philosophy is deeply rooted in the belief that it is the chemistry between the artist and the printmaker that results in the finest work.  With five IRIS and one Epson printer the studio can provide printmaking services on a wide variety of materials and up to 44” by unlimited length.

Silicon Gallery was one of the first galleries dedicated to showing work created on or influenced by the computer. The current “Hot off the Press” series of shows focus on artists who have recently produced a body of work printed at Silicon Gallery Fine Art Prints.
